Abstract

A folder of laboratory forms, part of the field notes for the survey records on migratory birds specimens collected in Cyprus for the Palearctic Migratory Bird Survey. From the finding aid (SIA RU000435): "The Palearctic Migratory Bird Survey (PMS), a survey of migratory birds, their ectoparasites and the viruses they carry, was conducted in the eastern Mediterranean from 1966 to 1971. The primary PMS operation site was in northern Egypt. Surveys were also conducted in Cyprus and Israel. The PMS involved scientists of the Smithsonian Institution, the United States Naval Medical Research Unit, and Yale University, and was funded by the Army Research Office, the Smithsonian Foreign Currency Program, and the Smithsonian Research Foundation. George E. Watson, Chairman, Department of Vertebrate Zoology, and Curator, Division of Birds, National Museum of Natural History, was Principal Investigator". Surveys were also conducted in Uganda. The forms are dated from "8 Sept. 67" to "5 Nov. 67", and are not ordered by date. They are numbered US-1 to US-50. The laboratory forms provide the name of the bird species, the dates the birds were processed or collected, the locality, and sex, type of examination (dissection, plumage, soft parts), the presence of molting, the weight, fat, the way the bird was disposed of ("skin, skelton, alcoholic, discarded"), the preparator's name or initials, the presence of ectoparasites, data on blood tests for the presence of viruses (not filled on any of these forms), and additional remarks.
