Abstract

Field book (divided in two folders for preservation purposes) of banding forms covering the year 1968 and numbered "A-5801 to A-5900, A-2001 to A-3000, recaptures, A-6001 to A-6596". They are part of the field notes for the survey records on migratory birds specimens collected in Israel for the Palearctic Migratory Bird Survey. From the finding aid (SIA RU000435): "The Palearctic Migratory Bird Survey (PMS), a survey of migratory birds, their ectoparasites and the viruses they carry, was conducted in the eastern Mediterranean from 1966 to 1971. The primary PMS operation site was in northern Egypt. Surveys were also conducted in Cyprus and Israel. The PMS involved scientists of the Smithsonian Institution, the United States Naval Medical Research Unit, and Yale University, and was funded by the Army Research Office, the Smithsonian Foreign Currency Program, and the Smithsonian Research Foundation. George E. Watson, Chairman, Department of Vertebrate Zoology, and Curator, Division of Birds, National Museum of Natural History, was Principal Investigator". Surveys were also conducted in Uganda. The forms go from A-5801 to A-5900 and are dated from Mar. 29, 1968 to Apr. 23, 1968. Each leaf, printed on one side only, includes five forms. In addition to the date, the forms show the localities of capture and release, the band's number, the species, sex, age, measurements on plumage, soft parts or skull, weight, fat, molt situation, absence or presence of ticks, and additional remarks by the researchers.
