Abstract

A folder containing newspaper clippings on the expedition led by Captain Allan G. Hancock, the Los Angeles businessman and patron of sciences, to the Galapagos Islands on the cruiser Velero III at the end of December 1932 at the end of December 1932 and ended in March 1933. Title from cover inscription and from divider folder. The cover has inscription "Property of Fred C. Ziesenhenne" and is marked "Please return!" in red ink. The clippings include text and black-and-white photographs from various newspapers in English and Spanish, ranging from 1932 to 1934, for those that are dated, usually by hand in ink. The main goal of the Hancock expedition was to continue, over three months, research started three years previously on the marine and terrestrial life of the islands, as well as to visit a few people, Utopians who had elected to live on the islands: among them a German couple, Dr. Friedrich Ritter and Frau Dore Koervin, and an Austrian baroness, Mrs. Bousequet de Wagner (Eloise Bosquet de Wagner Wehrhorn), self-declared ruler of one of the islands. Another goal of the expedition was to investigate the deaths and disappearances of a few people on islands of the area. Scientists on board brought back various specimens of the local fauna. The Smithsonian Institution and the San Diego Zoological Society were represented in the expedition.
