Nest record cards: Failed.

Abstract

This is a set of 59 nest records on card files. They are filled on both sides with notes of various researchers recording ornithological data for the Smithsonian Migratory Bird Center. The title comes from the label on the separator in the box containing other sets of card files from the collection and from the other sets of cards. It is inferred that the field research took place in Hubbard Brook Experimental Forest (HBEF), located in New Hampshire, as appears from the plots names that belong to the forest and are written on the cards. HBEF is operated by the USDA Forest Service since 1955, and is a member of the National Science Foundation's Long-Term Ecological Research (LTER) since 1988. The research concerned the black-throated blue warbler, represented by the initials "BTBW" on the cards. Cards show the year of research as "00". They show the nest number and band ID, the name and geographical location of the plot with grid coordinates, the nest orientation and height, and observations of behavior at the nest. Notes show the nesting behavior and the state of each nest, dated per day of each month of the nesting season. Observers' names are noted as initials on a column at the back of the cards, for each day of observation. Failure of the nesting activity and, when possible, its cause (depredation, etc.), are noted.
