Nest record cards: 1990-BW.

Abstract

This is a set of 98 cards, filled on both sides with notes of various researchers recording ornithological data for the Smithsonian Migratory Bird Center. The title comes from the label on the separator in the box containing other sets of card files from the collection, and from other sets of cards in the box. It is inferred that the field research took place in Hubbard Brook Experimental Forest (HBEF), located in New Hampshire, as appears on some of the cards and from the plots names on others. HBEF is operated by the USDA Forest Service since 1955, and is a member of the National Science Foundation's Long-Term Ecological Research (LTER) since 1988. The research concerned the black-throated blue warbler, represented by the initials "BW" on the labeled separator for the set of cards in the collection box, and on cards as "BW" or "BTBW". Each card shows the year ("90"), the nest number and band ID, the geographical location with grid coordinates, the study site location by plot, nest orientation and observations of behavior at the nest. Charts show measurements on the birds: weight ("WT"), tarsus length ("TAR"), wing dimensions ("WNG"). Notes show the nesting behavior and the fate of each nest, dated per day of each month of the nesting season. In case of failure, the cause (such as weather or predator) is noted on some cards.
