The field notes document the work of Neal Smith on White and Southampton Islands in Nunavut, Canada, during April 28 - August 1960. The loose sheets begin with a note written by Smith describing the purpose of the field work and the type of information to be recorded. The field notes primarily relate to his study of gulls. Entries are composed of varying topics with description, usually in a narrative style. Entries include a combination of location information (including campsites), dates, general weather conditions, temperature ice and snow, general physiography, vegetation, observations of mammals, birds and bird colonies, remarks, and sometimes remarks on archaeological sites found. Notes on birds contain common and scientific name, counts, and description of behavior and characteristics. There are also hand drawn maps with notations. At the end of the field notes is a specimen catalog that includes field number (1w-60 to 50w-60), sex, state of development, description, measurements, notes on appearance, and drawings of feathers as well as an egg white catalog that lists specimen number, type of bird, quantity, age, and location information.
