Abstract

The loose pages are a handwritten log labeled "A Record of Field Notes and Observations on the habits of the Shad and other fishes of the Chesapeake Basin," 1911-1912. Possibly by Lewis Radcliffe. The log records details about an investigation of the Chesapeake basin in order to work up a life history and habits of the shad and other fish common to the region. Entries are arranged by date and include narrative style entries. They describe daily activities, methods of recording information, collecting locations, descriptions of marine environment, sometimes air and water temperatures, work completed with other individuals (including names), appearance of shoreline terrain, process of getting to collecting sites, equipment used, and fish observed. Includes a table of temperatures taken from September 30 - November 18, 1911. Locations include Piscataway Creek, Bryan Point, Sassafras River, Liverpool Point and Accokeek Creek.
