Abstract

The catalogue is a record of crustacea collected and described by James D. Dana while part of the U.S. Exploring Expedition, 1838-1842. The volume begins with a note from the author, written in 1857, with a discussion of the fate of a significant portion of the specimens collected. Some were lost in the wreck of the sloop of war, Peacock, at the mouth of the Columbia River in 1841; there are issues with how specimens were handled upon arrival in Washington, D.C. This is followed with a note from S. J. Smith in 1875 describing specimen information listed in pencil. The volume includes a table of contents organized by order and lists specimen number, scientific name, page number and plate figure for the related report, location information, and and sometimes description of preservation. There is also an appendix. Locations are across the Pacific Ocean (e.g. Hawaiian Islands, Borneo, Philippines) including South America.
