The drawings were created possibly by Joseph Drayton and John Richard of fish observed or collected during the United States Exploring Expedition, 1838-1842. Some are preparatory sketches created during the expedition, and highly detailed drawings appear to have been created after. They include assigned numbers, and notes on the sketch. The detailed illustrations have little attending information. The sketch is dated August 30, 1839 and have notes about appearance and maybe location.
