Abstract

34 drawings of Thalassoma, Pseudolabrus and other unidentified fishes were created by Joseph Drayton, W.H. Dougal, and John Richard of fish observed and collected during the United States Exploring Expedition, 1838-1842. Illustrations are a variety of preparatory sketches with extensive notes and highly detailed drawings. They are hand drawn and some are hand colored. They were created during and after the expedition. Information included sometimes includes scientific name, creator, date, location, and notes about size, color, texture, and size. Locations noted include the Hawaiian Islands; Sydney, Australia; and New Zealand.
