Abstract

The 23 black-and-white and color drawings were created by Joseph Drayton, Alfred Agate, and John Richard are of fish collected or observed during the United States Exploring Expedition, 1838-1842. They were created during and after the expedition. Illustrations include preparatory sketches with extensive notes and highly details drawings. Images are hand drawn, some are hand colored. Images are from a vantage points of the fish. Information recorded includes scientific name, sometimes location (either latitude and longitude or geographic name), date, and notes about appearance and color. Locations recorded include Charlesorff Island, Fiji, and Honolulu, Hawaii.
