Abstract

The hand drawn illustrations were created by Joseph Drayton and John Richard of fish observed or collected during the United States Exploring Expedition, 1838-1842. Illustrations were created during and after the expedition. Some are rough sketches with extensive notes in preparation for more detailed drawings, others highly detailed drawings. Some are in color. Information recorded with them includes scientific name, assigned numbers, and sometimes notes about collecting of specimens, appearance, color, location, date, and creator.
