Abstract

These black and white photographs of people in and around the Bering sea area were probably taken during Stejneger's extensive study of the fur seals of the North Pacific-Bering Sea. Many of these photographs are unidentified and undated. Depicted in these photographs are local people to the Bering sea area and others associated with fur sealing. Locations depicted include Bering Island / Beringa, ostrov (one photograph identified) and Sitka, Alaska (one photograph identified), and Kamchatka. It is possible that many of the photographs, however, were taken in on Bering Island, Copper Island / Ostrov Mednyy, Robben Island / Tyuleniy, Ostrov and Kamchatka. Some of these photographs may be published.
