Unidentified photographs of the North Pacific and Bering Sea area
Close
PrintApproximately 150 black and white photographs pertaining to Stejneger's extensive study of the fur seals of the North Pacific-Bering Sea. These photographs are mostly unidentified and are undated. Many of these photographs, however, are duplicates of photographs identified in other folders within the collection. Depicted in these photographs are monuments, geographic features, fur seals, seal skins, people, and villages. Locations depicted include Bering Island, officially called Ostrov Beringa (one photograph identified) and Juneau, Alaska (one photograph identified). It is possible that a majority of the photographs, however, are of locations on Bering Island and Copper Island, and possibly some on Robben Island (officially called Ostrov Tyuleniy) and Kamchatka. Some or all of these photographs may be published.
