Abstract

The 5 hand-drawn illustrations were created by John Drayton, and are of fish observed or collected by the United States Exploring Expedition, 1838-1842. Includes two photograph copies of a sketch of local indigenous child from near the Columbia River. Some illustrations are sketches and others are highly detailed and hand-colored. They include species name, notes, two sets of numbers, and sometimes location. Sometimes notes are about different states in appearance of the specimen in life and death. Several are dated May of 1841. Locations noted include areas through the northwest United States: Puget Sound, Columbia River, Fort Vancouver, Walla Wall River, and Willamette Falls, Oregon.
