Abstract

The folder contains 2 letters and 2 color illustrations pertaining to genus Cardinalis. In the letter from A. Dugès to Robert Ridgway, dated April 20, 1890, sent from Guanajuato, Mexico, Dugès describes the Indian practice of painting on birds, two examples of which were sent to the Smithsonian Institution. Details include the permanence of the paint, affects on the live birds, and comparison to similar practices in France. In the undated letter from Bowdlers(?) to Robert Ridgway, Bowdlers(?) speculates on the varying seasonal plumage of Cardinalis and asks of Ridgway several questions pertaining to species and ranges. The 2 color illustrations include specimen number and black-and-white illustrations likely for publication.
