Abstract

The color illustration drawn by James G. Swan in December 1861, depicts a specimen shot on November 15, 1861, at Neeah Bay, Washington. The illustration is labeled Haematopus niger, Bachmans Oystercatcher or Red Billed Plover. Notes on the illustration describe measurements, coloration, shape of bill, toes, and color and flavor of meat. On the reverse, color illustrations, drawn life size, show size and color of head, bill, and feet.
