Abstract

The folder includes two letters sent to Robert Ridgway concerning the species Ardea wurdemanii. In the letter from C. J. Maynard, dated January 19, 1887, sent from Boston, Massachusetts, Maynard discusses the possible owner of a particular specimen in question. Letterhead states that Maynard was a dealer in birds' eggs, skins, minerals and naturalists' supplies, and an artistic taxidermist. In the letter from D. P. Ingraham, dated December 2, 1887, sent from Jacksonville, Florida, Ingraham provides a detailed account of the collection of specimens of Great White Herons off the coast of Cape Sable, Florida, during a winter collection from 1886-1887. Details of collection on February 27, 1887, include location of feeding grounds on Arsenice Keys [Arsenic Bank] and plumage colors of young birds present in nests. Letterhead states that Ingraham was a collector in geology, ornithology, oology, conchology, and general natural history.
