Abstract

The field book documents the work of Charles L. Gazin in Wyoming and Montana, May 20 - September 9, 1948. The notebook states it documents the "Smithsonian Institution 1948 Expedition Wyoming and Montana," Acc. No. 180548. It contains a specimen list that details specimen number (1-45), description, collector (C.L.G., C.L.G. Jr., E.H.G., G.E.L., George Shea, Chester Gogin (?), and Kay), date (August 7 - August 30), locality, and age. Locality description varies in length, and is sometimes very detailed. A narrative passage describes Gazin's travel to Harlowton, Montana, to meet with A. C. Silberling on August 10. After visiting several quarries, Gazin returned to Pipestone on August 11. Gazin lists the geological sections identified in the quarries. A map accompanies the narrative, detailing location of quarries and distance from town. The notebook also includes a list of expenses organized per day (including meals, travel, accommodations, and supplies) and a total accounting of balance owed to the Smithsonian Institution. Some expenses include locations.
