The field book documents Frank C. Whitmore's field trips, 1969 - 1974. Pages are numbered (1-60).Entries are dated. They include a variety of details: some are narrative in style, others offer partial itineraries, travel details (destinations, mileage), locality details (include distance from, names of streets, structures etc.), geological details (characteristics of layers including color and composition, zone number, formation) sections, types of fossils found per site, contact information, miscellaneous notes relating to daily work. There are lists of photographs with corresponding number and captions. There are notes on specimen holdings at the L.A. County Museum from 1970. Sketches to augment some descriptions of specimens. Notes from trip to Amchitka include details about weather as well as current flora and fauna observed. Specimens collected include porpoise. Note states he collected at Portsmouth, Virginia with C. E. Ray. Locations include but not limited to vicinity of Amchitka, Alaska; China Lake, California; Nomini Cliff, Solomons, Maryland; Lee Creek, North Carolina; Elsic Lake, New Jersey; Summerville and Dorchester County, South Carolina; Wakefield, Portsmouth, Virginia; Mattaponi River.
