The field book documents fauna collected by H. G. Deignan in Ceylon [Sri Lanka] during 1944. Also includes information for specimens collected in India and United States. Entries vary in content. Includes numbered specimen list that states binomial and location. This is followed by a list of collected amphibia and reptilia which lists type (common name), date, location (sometimes includes address, landmark, estate or district name). Also includes several lists for additional kinds of fauna: mammals (primarily bats and small rodents) that list number, type, sex, location information (estate and district), date, and preparation; mollusca that lists number, quantity, type, location (village name), sometimes habitat (e.g. from roadside ditch), elevation, date; insecta that lists number, type, location (estate, town, or district), date. It ends with a numbered list of birds collected that includes binomial, sex, "t.g.e" or "o.n.e.", location (estate name, district), date, and remarks. Remarks include additional information about appearance, specimen preparation, or location information. Most collecting took place in Sri Lanka, but also includes notes for specimens collected in Arkansas, California, District of Columbia, Illinois, Indiana, Maryland, Texas in United States; Bombay, Salsette, Hyderabad, Madras, Bengal in India.
