Abstract

The black-and-white photographs document environment of Howland Island, 1937-1938, 1948-1949. Photographs have captions on the reverse side, including various types of description, date, sometimes negative number, and source of photograph. Subject matter includes terrain and vegetation (sometimes type), structures and airstrip, Earhart Light, flocks of birds, and unidentified individuals. There are some duplicates. Photographs come from Department of Interior, US Coast Guard, and US Navy Bureau of Aeronautics.
