Abstract

The materials include two field notebooks, transcribed field notes, and tables of data documenting Helmut K. Buechner's field work in Uganda, 1956 - 1957. Transcribed notes cover November 15, 1956 - November 15, 1957. These are dated entries organized by time of day. They are observation notes noting with whom worked, details on numbers, location of herds and individual kob (age, sex), other types of wildlife, vegetation (age, type, abundance, condition), notes on location, tables of data. There are also detailed notes on behavior and interactions, often describing identified individuals. There are hand drawn maps of individual kob in landscape and notations in the margins. Subjects like feeding habits and breeding are sometimes specifically addressed. |The first notebook covers October 2 - 11, 1957, and includes travel details (Tsavo National Park, Kenya) and time of day, colleagues with whom worked, weather, observations of wildlife (time of day, numbers, location) and individual animals (height, age, physical characteristics like color), terrain, soil (composition, appearance, and sampling), and vegetation.|The second notebook (Buechner #3) covers January 25 - April 28, 1957, and includes details about aerial counts (time of day, location, direction, type) as well as notes on meetings and miscellaneous notes. Part of the notebook is blank.|Loose papers cover tables on Lolim Kob composition counts for 1958, references and extra copies of transcribed notes on observed dead kob from 1957 that include measurements, weight, location, stomach contents, lactation, sexual organs, parasites, and remarks.
