Abstract

The field book documents geological observations of F. B. Meek during David Dale Owen's surveys, 1849. Notebook begins with notes on scientific reference texts, personal items, followed by a table of data for May 30 - June 24 (date, time, temp, WB, wind, cloud, course, and notes); followed by dated journal entries (May 11 - June 21); then a series of lists for expenses, illustrations and notes on shells, provisions, as well as alpha-numeric identifiers for locations followed by descriptions, and varnish for specimens. Journal entries describe vegetation observed including phenology, travel details, weather and temperature, daily activities, observed terrain including geological characteristics (type of rock), campsites, interactions with and observations of local Indian tribes. Locations are across Minnesota, including Kettle River and St. Croix River.
