Abstract

The field book documents geological observations of F. B. Meek during David Dale Owen's surveys, April 6 - July 1848. In the beginning of the notebook is a list of Indian names of locations, list of staff and their positions, miscellaneous notes, and birds seen or heard on the St. Peters River [Minnesota River] in Minnesota. Pages are numbered. Entries are dated and describe travel details, geological landmarks and terrain, fossils, vegetation observed, types of stone and geological characteristics observed, weather, temperature, daily activities, and interactions with participants. Locations include but are not limited to sites in Minnesota and Iowa. There are references to Fort Snelling.
