Abstract

The correspondence documents Henri F. Pittier's botanical field work in the Panama Canal Zone. He began working for the Isthmian Survey and remained in Panama after it ended, collecting for the Smithsonian Institution. Much of the correspondence relates to expenses, payments, specimen shipments, staffing, and other logistics. Letters also describe a combination of weather, routes with dates, observed vegetation (types and abundance), notes on wood samples collected, types of documentation used (including film), entomology, as well as notes on the history and observations of the local populations. One letter in particular has extensive narratives relating observations along shoreline and inaccuracies found in maps used by Pittier. In some cases he lists incorrect location names with the correct name.
