Abstract

Original logbook of the Grampus, 15 February to 17 March 1889, station record numbers 5050 to 5098. Data recorded include station no., date, time of day, time of tide, locality, exact position, depth, nature of bottom, dredging instrument used, direction of drift, distance, temperature of air, term. no., temperature of surface water, temperature at depth of no. fathoms, temperature at bottom, density at surface, density at depth of no. fathoms, density at bottom, number of salinometer, barometer reading, state of sky, direction of wind, force, rain, direction of surface current, force, direction of bottom current, force, name of vessel, service to which attached, name and rank of commanding officer, name and position of observer, and notes relating to station. The notes are lengthy and narrative and include remarks on fish trials, bait, collections of fish and other marine life, and dredging. Localities include: Gulf of Mexico, and west coast of Florida.
