The notebook documents the mammal collecting of C. O. Handley in Panama and Bocas del Toro, February 12 - April 5, 1991. It includes a calendar, journal, loose notes, as well as notes on birds and mammals. The calendar includes notes on travel and destinations as well as phase of moon. Journal entries are dated and headed with location or route. They describe temperature, plants state of bloom, travel details (mode of transportation, time of day) observed vegetation (including enroute), daily activities, colleagues with whom worked, travel logistics, observed wildlife, campsites, terrain, quantities and types of specimens collected (including bats and birds), and collecting method. There are notes in the margins relating to Merrill Varn's project of the time, as well as birds or mammals observed. Locations are often identified by island name. Notes include a list of supplies; temperatures and rainfall for Isla Popa; and English and Spanish vocabulary for variety of animals with prices (e.g. buho - owl). Notes on birds are organized by date followed by type. First page includes entries that are sometimes extended, detailing appearance and color of anatomy, sometimes listing collector. Second page is a bird list headed by date. The page and a half of notes on mammals are organized by date and type and include details about habitat, location caught, appearance, abundance / rarity, and behavior. This is followed by sheets divided for bats and non-bats collected. These list date, place, phase of moon habitat, # nets, catch (with kept, released, and total), and remarks. Remarks are often blank.
