Catalogue of fishes

Abstract

This folder consists of several lists of fish specimens collected by William Stimpson, 1853-1855. The first list includes fishes collected in 1853 to 1854 in VA, Cape de Verdes Islands, Madeira, Simon's Bay, Cape of Good Hope, Coral Sea, Port Jackson, Australia, and other locations. The second list is entitled "Catalogue of Fishes collected at Hong Kong, China, in February and March 1855, and mostly packed in Keg 10, Hkf". The list includes number (Hkf1 through Hkf119), scientific name, notes on collection or observation (purchased in the market, seen in the market, etc.), and no. of specimens collected. The third list is entitled "Japanese Fishes not elsewhere catalogued, Jpf". The list includes number (Jpf-1 through Jpf-29), scientific name, notes on collection (purchased, caught, etc.). The fourth list is entitled "List of fishes purchased at the market of Napa Kiang, Loo Choo [Ryukyu Islands], April 1855". The list includes number (Lchf-1 through Lchf-14) and scientific name. Also includes many loose pages, each with one entry on a single specimen, listing: scientific name, number, location and date that specimen was caught, and detailed description of color and physical characteristics. Loose specimen notes correspond to the bound specimen lists in some cases.
