Abstract

The field book documents C. O. Handley's field work in Virginia March 15 - September 2, 1943 (pages 50 - 54); Highland county trip September 18 - 26, 1943 (pages 2 - 46); Highland county trip December 29 - 31, 1943; Cumberland county in July 1944. Notes are hand written and some have numbered pages. Entries are headed with date and location. Most entries run consecutively. They are journal style and describe daily work, specimens collected (sometimes as lists with type and quantity), collecting methods (type, quantity, location), terrain (sometimes elevation) and vegetation, observed fauna behavior, and lists of mammals for Highland county (type, abundance / rarity, habitat). There are sketches of terrain and trap placement, and colored illustrations of rodent specimens from 1943. Sometimes location information includes landmarks like names of schools.
