Abstract

The field book documents C. O. Handley's field work in Virginia, January 3 - December 21, 1942. Portions are typed, others are hand written. Pages are numbered (11 - 18; 1 - 49) Typed notes relate to the study of soricidae [shrews] (January 3 - May 31) in Patrick county and Blacksburg. The journal begins with an overview description of shrews. This is followed by dated entries that describe observations of terrain, vegetation, specimens collected (with lists), and collecting methods. Notes indicate specimens were sent to University of Michigan. Hand written notes from June 10 to December 21 cover travel in Mountain Lake, Blacksburg, and Lynchburg, Virginia. Entries are dated and describe vegetation and terrain (sometimes in elevation), wildlife observed, collecting methods, specimens collected (sometimes with lists and counts). There is a hand drawn map and sketches of collecting sites.
