Abstract

The journal documents the field work of Charles O. Handley, Jr. in Bocas del Toro (Panama), January 12 - March 14, 1960. Entries are dated and headed with location or route. They describe travel details (mode of travel, destinations, routes, accommodations, field stations), staffing and work space in Panama, daily work, weather, travel companions, interactions with colleagues, collecting methods (quantity, type, location, whether day or night), specimens (bats and rats) collected (usually in a list with scientific name, quantity, condition), vegetation (types, including crops), as well as terrain and elevation. There are sketches of collecting sites with notes on terrain and vegetation. There are notes in the margins highlighting subject matter in the entries. Includes a letter from Gorgas Memorial Laboratory relating to anticipated field research. Locations include Almirante and Boca del Drago in Bocas del Toro.
