Abstract

The journals document the field work collecting and studying live bats by Charles O. Handley in 1976 - 1979. Includes tabs for February - March 1976, October - November 1976, October 1977. There are loose inserts of maps with "recon" notes for netting areas. There is a calendar for February and March indicating locations (stations). Journal entries are dated and headed with location / route and indicates work for Environmental Science Program BCI bat monitoring project. Journals consistently discuss aspects of travel (travel times, destinations, routes), daily work and time of day, colleagues with whom he travels, weather and temperature, specimens collected including totals, terrain and vegetation, sometimes observations of flora and fauna including insects, collecting methods (net placements), bat behavior (including diet).|The journal for February - March 1976 includes a map listing destinations. Entries are dated and headed with location. Entries includes discussion of tagging and observations of live bats, methods of tagging, sketches and maps of collecting locations, depiction of tagging patterns used on bats, and tagging. Locations include BCI and Canal Zone. Sometimes they specify station locations.|The journal for October 6 - November 30, 1976, begins with a map of notations, (unidentified). Includes details about interactions with STRI staff relating to insect specimens. Locations are in vicinity of BCI.|The journal entries for October 1 - 13, 1977, includes a comparison of catches to previous years. Journal entries for February - March 1978 begin with a calendar with notations (unidentified). There is a map of Barro Colorado with numbered, colored notations. There are notes on stream conditions with table of related measurements. Journal entries include details along the lines described above including calendars, maps and entries.
