The journal and notes document the field work of Charles O. Handley, Jr., in Panama, April 26, 1957 - March 15, 1958. Each year begins with a preliminary report of mammal survey listing itinerary, purpose, and results. Entries are headed with date and location or route. Entries describe travel details (destinations, time of day, mode of transportation), terrain, vegetation, local staffing, observations of flora and fauna (including behavior) including general observations of insects, specimens collected (mammals and birds, sometimes with lists of type and quantity), collecting method (bait, type including live traps, location), weather, humidity and temperature. Field work locations include local indigenous communities. References work at Gorgas Memorial Laboratory and the yellow fever project. Notes in the margins relate to subject matter in entries. Locations include (1957) Cerro Azul, Boca del Drago, Mandinga (San Blas); (1958) Darién, Pan del Pet. camp near Río Tuquesa, Río Tuira, Río Paya.
