The journal and notes document the field work of Charles O. Handley, Jr. in Panama, 1991 - 1993. There are a variety of types of notes included. There are notes on Nuri from the 1 : 50,000 map. There are notes on bats in Nuri (22 pages) that list date, place, phase of moon, weather, habitat, quantity of nets, time, description of catch including type (scientific name), kept, released, and total, as well as remarks. Descriptions of catch are sometimes extensive. They discuss appearance, color, and condition of specimen. Sometimes habitat descriptions include sketches. There are notes on non-bats in Bocas del Toro collected with the following categories: date, night, place, moon, light, weather, habitat, # rinker, # national, bait, catch (kept, released, total), shot (loc), purchased (loc), remarks. Entries tend to be minimal in detail. There are photocopies of island maps (some with a few notes) and information on the night sky for 1993. A few pages of the journal are photocopies. There is calendar for the ninth Bocas Island Expedition (1993) noting daily destinations and basic activity description, followed by table of weather per date with temperatures (2 per day) and "ppt". Notes on birds of Bocas for 1993 (2 pages) are organized by date and headed with location or route. They describe type of birds observed (sometimes as a list), behavior (sometimes with time of day), and bird songs. |This is followed by a journal for February 17 - March 27, 1993. Entries are dated and headed with location. They describe travel details (mode of travel, destinations, accommodations, campsites), local news, personal and professional interactions with colleagues and local inhabitants, daily activities, field work, and weather. There is a sheet of notes for March 6 - 17th, relaying details about weather, temperature, habitat, collecting methods, and specimen collected. Locations include BCI [Barro Colorado Island]. There are hand drawn maps and sketches of Nuri with notes about camp site.
