The journal and notes document the field work of Charles O. Handley, Jr. in Panama, October 15 - December 15, 1992. The notebook begins with notes organized by topic (potential corollia roosts, BCI birds, BCI figs). Most of these entries are then written chronologically, with dates as subheadings, followed by descriptions of location (i.e. lab), terrain, and vegetation. Notes on birds are sometimes lists of observed birds, with remarks about behavior (i.e. song); these notes tend to be 1 to 5 lines in length. Notes on figs discuss atta / fig relationship and include dated subheadings with notes and references to the journal for 1992. |Notes are followed by his journal. Entries are dated and headed with location. Structure and content is similar to his other journals with travel details (destination, mode of transportation, time of day), colleagues with whom worked (including Elisabeth Kalko), daily activities, notes on work space, notes on contemporary events in Panama (i.e. dynamics between game wardens and local inhabitants), observations of flora (figs) and fauna (bats, birds), weather, collecting methods, and preparation of specimens. Sometimes specimens are listed with type (scientific name), quantity, and sex. There are notes in the margins highlighting topics in the entries. Includes insert of typed BCI research notes from Elizabeth Kalko for October 24 - 29, 1992 collecting fig specimens; these are organized with headings fig consensus and flight cage experiments with Artibeus jamaicensis and Ficus citrifolia. Includes sketches of observed flowers and plants. Locations are on BCI [Barro Colorado Island].
