The journal and notes document the field work of Charles O. Handley, Jr. in Panama, June 6 - August 22, 1991. The notebook includes a calendar, journal, and tabs for expenses (blank), miscellaneous information (contact information for colleagues, local staff and inhabitants, recipes, notes on trapping methods, notes relating to tissue collection), and figs on islands of Boca del Toro. The calendar includes notes on locations. The journal entries are dated and headed with locations / routes. Entries cover travel details (destinations, mode of travel), daily activities, meetings and interactions with colleagues, details about STRI staff and activities, notes covering colleagues' comments and observations, observations of flora and fauna including birds and mammals (including nesting sites, bat roosts, habitat, behavior), terrain and vegetation, study of plants (fig trees), and weather. There are notes in the margins highlighting subject matter relating to fauna, location (often by island name), or work relating to individual named Merrill (full name not specified though likely Merrill Varn). Locations referred to include Gamboa, BCI [Barro Colorado Island], and Bocas de Toro. There are photocopies of Spanish language news clippings and loose inserts.
