Pages are not bound. Entries are dated, and are narrative in style. They contain details about daily events; interactions, conversations and meetings with colleagues; weather; locations, including campsites; observed wildlife including birds and their nests, surrounding vegetation, and terrain; observations of plants and trees and their state of growth, and specimens collected. Significant locations are often listed at the top of an entry. Locations are referred sometimes by property owner, geographic location (i.e. body of water), or town. Some locations mentioned include the vicinity of Bullneck, Virginia; Silver Hill, Maryland; Ossipee, New Hampshire; and Wake Forest, North Carolina.|Includes a significant section toward the middle of the notebook on local and family history, sometimes copied from other sources. These include a wide variety of information including lists of property and sale of items for individuals and organizations (i.e. churches) in the area in the 19th century, addresses, and dates.
