Abstract

The black and white photographs were taken by the Manns on the Smithsonian-Firestone Expedition to Liberia in 1940, while collecting animals for the National Zoo. Subject matter includes: the expedition's progression over land and waterways in a variety of vessels; portraits of participants and native people; Ralph Norris (animal keeper) with a pygmy hippo; tribal dances; Monrovia waterfront; care and housing of collected animals; Episcopal Mission at Bromley; and people at work at the plantation. Images are in a variety of sizes; some include captions.
