Abstract

The journal documents the field work of Merlin D. Tuttle for the Smithsonian Venezuelan Project, November 17, 1965 - January 26, 1966. Entries are headed with date and location (town, distance from, including ranches and plantations). They describe travel details (destinations, accommodations, mode of transportation, routes, time of day), daily work, interactions with colleagues and local inhabitants, communications with C. O. Handley, flora (types, measurements) and fauna observed, terrain, weather and phase of moon, specimens collected (type, quantity, sometimes specimen number). There are hand drawn maps with notes on numbered collecting sites. These are followed by a list of descriptions of vegetation and terrain of collecting sites. Locations are in the vicinity of Caracas [Distrito Federal] and Puerto Páez.
