Abstract

The journal documents the field work of Norman Peterson for the Smithsonian Venezuelan Project, January 1 - April 15, 1968. Entries are dated and come in two formats: narrative style and numbered lists. Narrative entries describe travel details (routes, destinations, campsites), daily activities, interactions with local officials and colleagues, collecting site terrain and vegetation, and various stages of work with specimens. Numbered lists describe details of specimen collecting events including collecting method (type, quantity, location), type and quantity of specimens (mammals), weather and habitat (sometimes phase of moon), specimens processed (sometimes with specimen numbers, 21004 - 22053), and comments. Collecting sites are numbered and described in detail. Location information includes town or district, distance from, altitude, latitude and longitude. There are hand drawn maps of campsites.
