Abstract

The journal documents the field work of Norman Peterson for the Smithsonian Venezuelan Project, November 1 - December 31, 1967. The entries are in two formats, numbered lists detailing specimen collecting and narrative style entries describing a various aspects of the entire trip. These include daily activities, interactions (with officials, local inhabitants, and colleagues), routes, campsites, collecting locations, and work with specimens (collecting, processing, and shipping). Includes hand drawn maps of collecting sites and campsites. Numbered lists detail collecting methods (type, quantity, and location), quantity and type of specimens collected (mammals, reptile, ectoparasites), weather (sometimes temperature) and habitat, specimens processed (sometimes with numbers, including 14811 - 21002), and comments covering time range, location, and additional pertinent information. There are also descriptions of numbered collecting sites relating information about vegetation (types) and terrain including soil composition. Location information includes town or district, distance from, altitude, and latitude and longitude.
