Abstract

The journal documents the field work of Norman Peterson for the Smithsonian Venezuelan Project, July 1 - October 31, 1967. Entries are dated and in two formats. First one includes numbered lists detailing specimen collecting. These relate collecting methods (type, quantity, locations), quantity and type of specimens, weather and temperature, time range of collecting, habitat and vegetation information, specimen numbers processed (13816 - 14790, but numbers are not always listed), and additional descriptions and comments relating to the period of work. Includes hand drawn maps for collecting locations with notes. There are also narrative style entries providing descriptions of daily activities, expenses, interactions, weather, and communications. Sometime these have descriptions of numbered areas with notes on vegetation (type and measurements) and terrain, sometimes soil composition. There are notes on observed behaviors of live specimens.
