Abstract

The journal documents the field work of Norman Peterson for the Smithsonian Venezuelan Project, October 27 - November 17, 1966. The journal begins with an itinerary. Entries are dated and begin with destination or route. Details include travel details (time of day, route, mode of travel, campsites), daily activities including meals (sometimes local dishes), meetings and interactions with local inhabitants and colleagues, supplies, details about local staffing, weather, and observed flora and fauna. Specimen collecting includes type, habitat, vegetation, and terrain. Some entries detail a list relating to specimen collecting noting trap method (type and locations); quantity, type, and condition of specimens collected; weather and habitat; specimen numbers processed (11202 - 11274), and locality information (combination of town, district, geological landmark, distance from, sometimes latitude and longitude). There are observations of local indigenous populations and list of supplies.
