Abstract

The collection of black and white photographs were taken during the National Geographic Society-Smithsonian Institution Expedition to the Dutch East Indies in 1937. Photographs were taken through out the expedition, and come in a variety of sizes. Subject matter includes local historic sites and gardens; villages and rural scenes; formal events; and the Mann's aboard ship with the collected animals. Includes souvenirs and a list of animals collected during the expedition, and ephemera listing walking and motor trips around Fort De Kock (Indonesia). Some locations are identified, including places in Japan and Indonesia. Several photographs have captions, though not all in English, possibly Indonesian.
