Abstract

This field book consists of the field notes of D. Griffiths, 1905. Griffiths conducted field work, including collecting and observing cacti and other plants in Texas and Mexico. Entries consist of narrative accounts of collecting activities and observations interspersed with entries on specimens collected. Specimen entries generally include collector number (7452 - 7941), scientific name, and notes on physical description (joints, flower color, fruit color, etc.), abundance / rarity, blooming period, and other observations. Emphasis seems to have been placed on fruit. Throughout the book are markings that appear to show that a cross-section of cactus fruit or flower was pressed / stamped on the page to indicate shape. These shapes have been outlined and added to in pencil. Also included is a record of cactus measurements and a roughly hand drawn map indicating an area of land where cacti are grown. Localities include: San Antonio (TX), Juarez (Mexico), Laredo (TX), Guadalajara (Mexico), and possibly others.
