This volume documents collections made by Robert R. Miller for a 1946 Guatemala survey, a cooperative project between U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and the government of Guatemala. Collecting localities include lakes, rivers, streams, and springs in Guatemala. The bulk of the volume comprises field notes that were recorded on field data record sheets of the U. S. National Museum Division of Fishes; these date from 8 March to 13 May 1946. Data sheet fields include tag number, station number (M46-1 to M46-95), locality, drainage, date, water, vegetation, time, bottom, shore, current, distance from shore, tide, depth of capture, depth of water, method of capture, collected by, preservative, temp, and air. The bottom half of most sheets, and often the back side and additional sheets, have extensive notes listing and describing species captured and providing details on collecting activities. Colored drawings of fish are sometimes included in the notes. In addition to Miller, Ancil D. Holloway is also listed as a collector on many records. Also included in the volume are general information about the Guatemala survey and notes from interviews with local fishermen.
