Abstract

This notebook details the field work of Lester F. Ward for the United States Geological Survey from 1891-1892. Localities focus mainly on areas along the Potomac River in Maryland and Virginia. Dated journal entries include observations of soils and rock, mostly clay and sand coloration, composition, and depth, as well as accounts of collecting plant and shell fossils. Locations of fossil beds are given, along with types of rock at these sites, and some species names.
