Abstract

This volume is W.W. Welsh's journal of travel and field research activities on the vessel Grampus from 24 October 1916 to 4 April 1917. The main cruise documented in this volume left Gloucester [Massachusetts] on 8 November 1916 and headed south, making stations in the Atlantic Ocean off of the east coast of the United States and the Gulf of Mexico. Station numbers recorded from aboard the Grampus span from approximately 10399 to 10487. The Grampus was in port at numerous locations along the way, where Welsh had the opportunity to get information from local fishermen. Much of the catch was made by shrimp trawl, particularly in the Gulf of Mexico.
