PrintThis binder contains a set of note cards and a typed "List of collections made by the fishing vessels of Gloucester [Massachusetts] and other New England sea-ports for the United States Fish Commission, from 1877 to 1880." Each notecard is headed by a species name, under which are one or more records. Each record includes date, position or location, depth, name of captain, and name of vessel. Records are dated 1878-1879; some include a number instead of or in addition to the date. The typed document lists records of collections numbered from 533 to 972, dating from 1879 to 1881. Records generally include name of collector or captain, name of vessel, date, location, and species collected. The list also states that records 1 - 532 are published in the Report of the U.S. Fish Commissioner for 1879 (1882). There appear to be no records from 1877 in the binder, although 1877 is the start date used in the title of the typed list and the binder. The list includes records from 1881, although 1880 is listed as the end date in the list title and binder title.
